UK hydrogen train ventures out onto the main line
HydroFlex, the UK’s first hydrogen-powered train, ran on the main line today, signalling a big step forward towards the UK’s net zero targets. Developed jointly by the University of Birmingham and train owner Porterbrook, the conversion of a Class 319 all-electric train has been supported with a £750,000 grant from the Department for Transport. Its development took almost two years of work and more than £1million of investment by both the University of Birmingham and Porterbrook. Hydrogen-powered trains use hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, water and heat. The ground-breaking technology behind the trains will also be available by 2023 to retrofit current in-service trains to hydrogen helping decarbonise the rail network and make rail journeys greener and more efficient. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps visited the development site to meet with leading rail experts from the University of Birmingham’s Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE) and to see first-hand HydroFLEX on the mainline. He also announced his ambition for Tees Valley to become a trailblazing Hydrogen Transport Hub. Bringing together representatives from academia, industry and government to drive forward the UK’s plans to embrace the use of hydrogen as an alternative fuel could create hundreds of jobs while seeing the region become a global leader in the green hydrogen sector. Tees Valley is perfectly placed to reap these benefits, following the development there of the world’s largest versatile hydrogen refuelling facility made possible through Government funding. Grant Shapps said: “As we continue on our road to a green recovery, we know that to really harness the power of transport to improve our country – and to set a global gold standard – we must truly embed change. “That’s why I’m delighted that through our plans to build back better we are embracing the power of hydrogen and the more sustainable, greener forms of transport it will bring.” To kick start the development in Tees Valley, the Department for Transport has commissioned a masterplan to understand the feasibility of the hub and how it can accelerate the UK’s ambitions in Hydrogen. The masterplan, expected to be published in January, will pave the way for exploring how green hydrogen could power buses, HGV, rail, maritime and aviation transport across the UK. The aim would then be for the region to become a global leader in industrial research on the subject of hydrogen as a fuel as well as an R&D hub for hydrogen transport more generally, attracting hundreds of jobs and boosting the local economy in the process. The next stages of HydroFLEX are already well underway, with the University of Birmingham developing a hydrogen and battery powered module that can be fitted underneath the train, which will allow for more space for passengers in the train’s carriage.
EV Land Rover Defender Road Trip
Welcome to The Late Brake Show. In this episode Jonny Smith has the task of driving an EV converted classic Land Rover Defender from rural Wales into central London, where it is put inside world-renown retail store Selfridges. This 'E-Lander' was a project vehicle build commissioned by Selfridge's themselves in conjunction with Barbour clothing company in order to raise the awareness of more sustainable shopping. Jonny made a previous video for the Selfridge's Project Earth campaign ( https://www.selfridges.com/GB/en/features/project-earth/ ) and Barbour's fascinating ReLoved jacket restoration/upcycling programme ( https://www.barbour.com/uk/reloved ), but this is a 'director's cut' with more specific details on the Tesla EV running gear beneath this 2015 Defender. So called 'E-Lander' the car was built by Electric Classic Cars in Wales ( https://www.electricclassiccars.co.uk/ ) and modified specifically for the client to still perform off-road, as well as a town and country vehicle. The Tesla Model S large motor has been turned 90-degrees in order to power driveshafts to both front and rear, meaning it is a single motor 4x4, with enough power to keep up with an Aston Martin DBX or Mercedes G63 AMG SUV. At the same time it stealthily hides its lack of exhaust, long gearstick and engine, so unassuming eyes simply see it as an immaculately tailored Defender. Talking of tailoring, the interior was masterminded by Barbour, who supplied their classic tartan jacket lining, together with 'Vegan leather' for a soft, luxurious cabin. The result? A scenic road trip in a Defender that drives better than any diesel Defender Jonny has ever tried. Expensive, yes, but these cottage industry EV converted classics will certainly form a strong part of charismatic futuristic motoring. Stop. It's time for The Late Brake Show. Antarctica : What happens if the 'Doomsday' Glacier collapses?
Antarctica is home to some of the world's largest ice sheets and glaciers. They existed in a stable equilibrium of ebb and flow for millions of years until global warming started to melt them faster than the snow falls could replenish their ice. Now a new US / UK research collaboration has discovered that the rate of melt is even worse than scientists feared. What's driving this latest acceleration, and can we slow it down? Liquid Air Batteries. Literally energy from thin air. Seriously. Literally!
Energy storage from thin air sounds a bit too good to be true, but the beauty of this potentially transformational technology is the simplicity of a design that utilises tried and tested components that have been reimagined and re-engineered to perform a vital function for electricity grids, now and in the future. -- Interested in mastering and remembering the concepts that I present in my videos? Is the Gulf Stream collapsing?
The Gulf Stream and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation exert a huge influence on heat and energy distribution around our planet. Research shows that our warming atmosphere is affecting this vital system so profoundly that it's at risk of shutting down altogether with very severe consequences for our civilisation.
